Course Description

Reiki is an Eastern healing philosophy, combined with basic universal spiritual principles, which ultimately serves its practitioners very well. It is a practice which honors the holistic needs of the body and spirit and integrates healing principles to ultimately enrich the entire being.

In this course, you will learn the basics of Reiki, as it is generally taught and practiced by Reiki Masters, and you will have a foundational understanding necessary for self administering its healing principles. We will touch on the history of Reiki as well as its different Eastern and Western branches, principles that govern the practice of Reiki, and both the basic and more complex philosophies concerning the body's energy and how it impacts the healing process.

At the end of the course, your understanding of Reiki principles and practices should be comprehensive and you should be ready to regularly implement the lessons. Through daily or weekly practice and regular meditation, you will prepare yourself to share your new knowledge and you will be ready to help heal others.

A distance attunement will be given.

Course Motivation

What is Reiki?

Experts in Reiki could easily agree that Reiki is a healing art. Reiki involves the same "laying on of hands" as so many practice in all parts of the world for the transference of healing power. Such practice is closely related to the conveyance of love via the touch of one human being to another, or from one person to his animal. Indeed, we are touching beings, conveying love, compassion and healing through the human touch.

Most practitioners agree every living being exudes warmth and an intangible energy. Such energy is often referred to as the life source, but in the macro view of life that energy actually is a transferred energy from the source of life or life source itself. While it is widely believed that there is actually one ultimate source of life, it is also widely recognized that every living thing contains a portion of that life source's energy or substance. In Christianity, the life source is referred to as Spirit or breath of life. In scientific circles, the life source is referred to in metaphysical terms as "energy" or a universal energy. The scientific description is often used by Eastern practitioners, particularly those from Japan and China.

The cultural reference to energy can better be explained by examining the various names assigned to it by different societies and groups.

For the sake of simplicity, we will discuss the life source or energy as Ki [Japanese] or Ch'i [Chinese] in the content of this course since it is from these cultures that Reiki originates.

In a very literal sense, a person's life source is the origin of their life. When a person's Ki has left their body, they are dead; the life source has ceased to operate within their being. While we may think of this life source as spirit or energy, it is far more tangible than what could otherwise be thought of as an intangible element of life.

RELIGIONS AND THE MEANING OF REIKI

Reiki was founded by Mikao Usui of Japan at the turn of the 20th century. It is not a religion. Neither is it a New Age philosophy since it originated in the East before the advent of the Western New Age although many who adhere to New Age philosophy like to practice Reiki. But Reiki itself puts forth no religious philosophy. In surveying the landscape of Reiki practitioners, we easily find people of every faith and religion. Although its founder was influenced by Christianity--principally by the healing miracles of Christ--Usui also researched the Japanese, Chinese and Indian aspects of Buddhism.

Once he had learned the secrets of Reiki healing, Usui followed the examples of Christ and Buddha by choosing to heal the poor, without thought of reward. These were his first patients. Eventually Usui opted to teach the healing secrets when he found his healing was being taken for granted.

SPIRITUALITY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPIRITUAL MAN IN EACH OF US

If anything can be said of Reiki and religion, it is that Reiki helps to develop our spiritual man inside our souls without the pomp of religious ceremony, the structure of a church or synagogue and without the recognition of a particular God. In other words, the practice of Reiki is one which seeks to get us in touch with _________ [God, Spirit, etc.] and help us to gain a greater understanding but without all of the rules of modern religions. In this aspect, Reiki may come under scrutiny or criticism by religious people for attempting to achieve spiritual things without any recognition [worship] of a deity.

THE ENERGY FACTOR

Reiki is all about the body's energy and using the body's energy "channels" to balance, relax and heal it. The Western philosophies closest to Reiki are: meditation; massage; and prayer. Yet Reiki is none of these in itself.

When working with the body's energy, the practitioner seeks to discern the subtle energy field around the body. Frequently referred to as the body's aura, this subtle energy field is part of the exchange between the practitioner and the client in the laying on of hands.

In Eastern healing practices, such as the Chinese healing that is accomplished through acupuncture, the energy channels or meridians are an integral part of the process of realigning the body's energy and balance for the purpose of restoring health. In a similar sense, the practice of Reiki is one in which the practitioner seeks to realign the client's energy and facilitate healing to the body. The idea is that healing can occur whether the ailment is understood or even known if the practitioner can simply achieve a realignment of the body's energy. Thus Reiki practitioners do not technically heal others, they re-enable others to heal themselves by redirecting blocked healing energies.

When you think about it, all things in life require a balancing in order to function at their optimal level. It only makes sense that the body, its organs and its energy flow would work in the same manner. The underlying theory is that when the body's energy is in balance, the body will heal itself regardless of what ails the person. Even people with deep religious convictions should recognize that their creator made their entire body to function perfectly and in health when everything inside of it is in balance.

Reiki, touch healing and other holistic therapies are gaining more and more credibility and exposure in Western culture as many people are becoming conscious of the flaws of our ultra-modern health care system.
